Winner of BRP’s 2015 Design Competition Announced during Arctic Design Week

Rovaniemi, Finland, February 18, 2015– A jury of BRP representatives and the Finnish design community selected Heikki Herranen, a 22-year design student, as the winner of BRP's 2015 Design Competition.

This second edition of BRP's Design Competition focused on the millennial generation (1980s – 2000s) and challenged students of the University of Lapland's Faculty of Arts & Design to shift existing snowmobile paradigms to become more attractive for younger snowmobile users. The industrial design students were mandated to design an entirely new winter experience at an affordable price.

BRP manufactures Lynx and Ski-Doo snowmobiles in Rovaniemi, the only snowmobile factory in Europe.

"Heikki's solution included a thorough research of the customer's needs and the product was designed just right for the targeted group, with an innovative and detail-oriented touch," says Risto Perttula.

"My design proposal Lynx Intuition is totally new way of snowmobiling. The driver controls the speed and motion of the vehicle with his own body movements. The structure is light and airy and I wanted to shift the current paradigms of snowmobiling. The vehicle resembles a spider or a grasshopper. This project has definitely been one of the best experiences during my studies", said Heikki Herranen.

Heikki was rewarded with a four-month paid internship at BRP Design & Innovation Centre in Canada next summer and will work alongside some of the best designers in the world from about 30 different countries. Other winners included second- and third place finishers Minna Silvennoinen and Tuomas Lappalainen, who both earned a monetary prize. The jury also gave honorable mentions to Lasse Virtanen and Elisa Määttänen in the High-Quality segment.

"This type of competition facilitates the transition to working life. The students were excited about working with a truly international company for real innovation projects," says Pertti Aula, industrial design teacher, University of Lapland.

The jury consisted of Denys Lapointe, senior vice-president, Design, Innovation and Corporate Image, Eric Fournier, manager, Advanced Concept & Design Services, and Risto Perttula, director R&D, Quality and Service from BRP, as well as Tapani Hyvönen, Chairman of the Board of ED-Design Ltd. and member of ICSID Executive Board. They unanimously opted for Heikki's design proposal based on the following criteria: research and ideation, innovation, environmental consideration, aesthetics, overall creativity and presentation.

All the design proposals are displayed at Science Centre Pilke (Ounasjoentie 6, Rovaniemi) during Arctic Design Week from now until February 22, 2015.
